South Sider Mandy Patinkin returns to his roots when he opens his new act Monday at the Cadillac Palace Theatre. Patinkin, who grew up in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, left his TV role in "Chicago Hope" a few years ago to devote more time to his family. Now that his eldest son is off to college, Patinkin is revving up his career.

He's performing a show featuring songs from his new CD, "Kidults."

"I'm touring this show and flying all over the country. I'm trying to persuade people not to be afraid to go out," Patinkin said, "and I encourage people to come downtown and take in our show. At a time like this, it's good for all of us to get together."

Speaking of getting together, while Patinkin is in town, he'll be going out to dinner every night with his aunts, uncles and cousins, many who still live on the South Side. "When I'm in Chicago, my relatives will come to every single show for the whole week," he said. "That's half the fun of coming here, and the other half is entertaining my hometown audience."
